“SUMMER BUBBLES” REVIEW

For starters, everything is BEAUTIFUL in this new Chinese drama offering.

It has a BEAUTIFUL story and packs a BEAUTIFUL ensemble cast.

Sparkling chemistry amongst the leads …..

and a charmed script ably rendered by the artistes.

Love is indeed, a merry-go-round in “SUMMER BUBBLES”, this stylish drama from Taiwan.

Didn’t SHAKESPEARE say that “the course of true love never did run smooth”?

Love is sweet, love is a treat …..

but love can also be lethal with the wrong dosage.

It can sear, tear and damage the human heart when you are not careful, yet we cannot live without this powerful element called love.

SUMMER BUBBLES offers one such story, tells one vivid tale.

Take one beautiful gal (BARBIE HSU) and two gorgeous actors (HUANG XIAO MING + PETER HO).

Weave them into a well-worn background of love, pain, angst and regret.

People die for true love as much as soldiers die for their country.

This is a true fact.

Recount the number of celebrities and common folks who had leaped to their deaths and succumbed to the throes of love when love died.

First, you’ve to come to terms with your loss during this interim period of emotional pain, when a relationship ends.

More likely you are to develop luduvudu.

We make mistakes, big and small, comic and tragic.

We pledge commitment, in all sincerity, to another person, only to realise later that our love and passion for the person isn’t as deep as we once thought and believed.

From there follows the broken promise, the bitterness and heartache and the guilt of having misled someone despite our best intentions.

Picture these fine ingredients in a cliched love story powered with raw emotions.

What makes it work so well?

Well, an immensely dedicated script that is intellectually crafted.

Alluring women and pretty boy hunks for you to ogle at.

Most important of all, the fine treatment rendered by a meticulous story-telling director.

Notwithstanding a competent Director-of-Photography to bring out the pomp and the splendor with finesse.

Because this is not just another simple love story.

This one is about the super rich and the ravishingly beautiful.

There need to be a touch of class, unfortunately notfound in most ASIAN idol dramas.

You’ve to have a colossal production budget to work around with, first to afford these Asian A-listers.

And then to provide these superstars with the lush settings to set this story afire.

This is how SUMMER BUBBLE comes about.

The theme is predominantly cliche – nothing new to crow about.

It’s a well-worn love story with two guys falling madly in love with the same gal, each trying to outwit the other, using all ways and means to convince the besotted damsel that he is indeed, the ultimate “one”.

Lucky gal, but the overly gushy affections are confusing and stifling her to a hilt.

But heck, the saving grace is Director JIANG FENG HONG helming with a competent treatment.

He packs in vibrant beautiful lush images and sometimes, rather corny lines that reek emotions a la Taiwanese novelist CHIUNG YAO, the passe queen of soaps.

This time, the screenplay is spawned from a popular mainland China novella of the same name “SUMMER BUBBLES” by Ming Xiao Xi.

This drama series is as real as an escapist’s dream.

It’s a tortuous love triangle that keeps you in suspense as to who the gal is going to choose in the end.

And there is a bevy of Taiwanese eye candies to ogle at.

Added bonus – two gorgeous leading men.

SUMMER BUBBLES warranties a touch of class that most CHINESE drama serials are lacking.

For avid fans of romanticism, this one can’t possibly go wrong.
